Designer Cotton Fabric
When one considers the modern world for a moment, it soon becomes a rather ironic and silly place. Over a hundred years ago an enterprising inventor invented a machine to strip the cotton buds from the cotton plant so that cotton could be used to make clothes with for everyone. But if you look around today, most fabrics are not made from one hundred percent cotton. There is usually some sort of synthetic fiber that has been added to make it more durable, more elastic or more whatever. Something that you are not bound to hear on the catwalks of Milan is something as gauche as designer cotton fabric.
Cotton is a durable, reliable and relatively inexpensive material to make fabric from. But fabric is not the only thing that cotton is used for though it is probably the most prevalent thing it is used for. People make fishnets, coffee filters, tents, paper, books, hoses and even gunpowder from cotton! It has a myriad of uses that have changed over the millennia and before the West even considered the uses cotton, the East was making paper and beds from the stuff. Today cotton is probably best known as being part of jeans. In a way you have designer cotton fabric right there in denim, as jeans are probably one of the most worn articles of clothing in the world.
It is true that many fabrics mix cotton with other materials like polyester to make it more durable or flexible but cotton its own is perfect. The durable fabrics that were made from cotton were used to make work shirts and corduroy. The place where most cotton products appear these days are in socks and underwear. Hardly designer cotton fabric but even though many people never really consider it anymore, cotton is a major part of our everyday lives. The international cotton trade is a huge industry that is worth billions of any currency you could wish to name. People have even gone so far as to try to make cotton replace other fabrics, like silk.
Shiny cotton is one form of cotton production that changes the way the cotton is woven into fabric to give it the appearance of silk. The process makes it weaker, however, and it does not have the same absorbency that normal cotton boasts. If there is a form of designer cotton fabric then it is probably Egyptian cotton. This type of cotton is made from certain cotton plants and is known and used for its luxury. Though originally only found in Egypt – hence the name – it has spread throughout the world.
Cotton is everywhere and part of everything. It is in almost all the clothes we wear and in things that most people would not even consider. Designer cotton fabrics are made for designer clothes, like jeans, but also for more mundane things like fishnets and fire hoses. A simple plant with a white bud is essential to our modern civilization – now that is ironic.
